Information About Our School
Age Appropriateness:
Our current curriculum is literature based. It is a spiral curriculum whose themes represent real-life interests and concerns while also ensuring basic academic success at each level of development. Our curriculum reflects our school’s philosophy and goals through age appropriate:
1. Lessons (pre-planned a month in advance)
2. Activities (which include: individual, small and large group projects)
3. Educational field trips and family interaction
Inclusion:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten acknowledges that changes in room arrangements and/or lesson plans may be required in order to meet the needs of the special needs child(ren) in our care. These changes are guaranteed not to affect the overall program for the currently enrolled majority.
Classroom Visits by Parent:
The Green House Preschool and Kindergarten invites its parents to visit their child(ren)’s classroom once a year for the purpose of observation. This visit should not exceed thirty (30) minutes due to the short attention span and the highly distracting nature of young children. Interested parents must first call the office and speak to the director or assistant director in order to set up the visit.
Child Evaluation:
The GHP & K has taken steps to assess its students’ development, needs and interest. A “Whole Child Development Assessment” is administered three times a year (November, February, & June) for each child enrolled at the school .
Conferences:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten schedules parent/teacher conferences three times a year to offer its families individual insight about their child(ren)’s current physical, social and emotional growth. The Green House asks parents to recognize the efforts that the teachers take to properly prepare for a sensitive evaluation of each student, we therefore request that: All conferences will be held on school property and every effort will be
made to provide an office space for extra privacy and confidentiality, if the need arises. A copy of the evaluation form used at the conference can be made upon request by the next school day.
Yearly Calendar:
The Green House provides all clients at registration, orientation and back-to-school night with a yearly calendar listing of all: Holidays, Vacation breaks and Observation days that the school is closed during the school year. It is the responsibility of the parent(s), legal guardian(s) or caregiver(s) to familiarize themselves with the school calendar. A master copy of the yearly calendar of events and closings can be found posted on the “Parent Communication Board” conveniently located at the entrance of each classroom.
Holiday Celebrations:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten makes every attempt to celebrate known holidays with an emphasis on culture rather than religion, as well as, holidays of special significance to the families. Parents are always welcome to share their traditions.
Communication Folder:
Communication is a vital part of assuring that children receive all the available benefits of The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten’s education. In order to facilitate this, the children will bring home a communication folder containing all school and teacher communication such as a child’s daily work, letters and reminders. The following steps should be taken immediately upon receipt of this folder.
Portfolios:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten updates personal portfolios every month for each of its students. These portfolios are an accumulation of authentic work that best represents each child’s true skills, abilities, strengths and weaknesses throughout the academic school year. Each portfolio will have, but is not limited to: Work samples (writing, art, etc.) and Journal drawings and story dictations.
Relationships Among Teachers and Families
Conference Request by Parent:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten feels that it is very important for the teachers to know what is happening at home so that he/she can be more understanding and supportive of a student’s behavior and/or needs. If, for any reason, a parent wishes to speak about/discuss their child(ren) with their child(ren)’s teacher, or the administration, they are encouraged to call the office and schedule an appointment. All meetings will be documented.
Working Parents:
We recognize that working parents may find that they are unable to attend school functions because of their work schedules. For this reason: Memos and reminders have become an essential part of our communication commitment to our families.
1. Arrangement will be made for phone conferences to discuss concerns and needs
2. Early morning conference scheduling will be available as well
Diversity:
The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten is a multicultural school and in order to service our families better and more effectively we provide or make arrangements for a translator via a staff member or another parent to help us relay our message with the utmost respect for cultural and family differences. It is also a Green House policy to have a translator when needed during parent/teacher conferences to accurately communicate a child’s development.
Pre-Enrollment Visit:
The Green House has developed a process by which a new student can begin the difficult task of adjusting. Families are encouraged to bring in their child(ren) to a “Pre-Enrollment Visit” where they will:
1. Interact with teachers and other children during play and/or other scheduled activities
2. Be observed by parent(s) and by the director or assistant director in order to determine proper placement
This visit is essential in order to orient the child(ren) into the program smoothly. We are aware that some children need more time to successfully get through the separation process; we therefore offer a reduction of days and/or hours (refer to program schedules) in order to facilitate a smoother transition.
Multi – Cultural Awareness:
It is the policy of The Green House, Preschool and Kindergarten to celebrate the various family structures and cultures that exists today. All the classrooms visually represent our efforts to recognize different nationalities, perspectives, languages and traditions via: Posters / Literature, Family wall, International lunches, Cultural celebrations (i.e. Christmas, Chinese New Year, Celebrations of the Dolls, Three Wise Men, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.) Multi – cultural play food, dress up clothes, songs and dances.
It is The Green House’s intention to expose its students to rich, diverse, cultural experiences whenever possible in order to promote tolerance and acceptance.
